ROXAS City — The number of measles cases in Capiz decreased by 83 percent this year, local health officials said.

From 78 patients on January 1 – August 4 last year, the number declined to only 14 during the same period this year, according to records from the Capiz Epidemiological Surveillance and Response Unit (CESRU) of Provincial Health Office (PHO).

Only seven cases were recorded in this city this year.

Two cases were recorded in each of the municipalities of Dumalag and Jamindan and one case in each of Panay, Sigma and Maayon.

The PHO attributed the drop in measles cases to its continued information and immunization campaign, said Jeoffry Espiritu, health education and promotion officer.

Personnel of Municipal and Barangay Health Centers are injecting free anti-measles monovalent vaccine to infants nine to 11 months old and measles mumps rubella to those who are 12–15 months old.

“We can prevent this illness if people will cooperate and use the proper measures to lessen the measles infection in the province,” Espiritu said.

Gov. Victor Tanco supports the anti-measles campaign which includes information dissemination through the tri-media including the Capiz Provincial Press Bureau. (Roxan Dichosa, Capiz Provincial Press Bureau/PN)
