ILOILO City – Ten girls from a nongovernment organization caring for abused children will perform with 12 French circus artists in six shows across Panay Island.

Cameleon Association, Inc. founder and trustee Laurence Ligier said the show dubbed “Lukso! Cirque de la Vie (Circus of Life)” aims to raise funds for the organization, spread awareness on child abuse prevention and caring for its victims.

Cameleon spends for the rehabilitation of abused children referred to them by the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

We need to raise funds in the Philippines because sad to say, most of the money I’m raising for the rehabilitation program come from abroad and for me, this is not a good sign of sustainability. We need your help,” Ligier said.

Even though most of the circus shows are free for the public, Ligier said, this will help “mobilize the people to reduce the cases of abuse.”

The Cameleon girls were taught how to perform circus acts by French artists in the past years as a form of therapy.

The 12 artists are from France’s National School of Circus (ENARC) but some of them come from countries like Switzerland, Peru and Austria.

Together with some of their teachers, they will stay in the country for three weeks as volunteers.

It’s a real pride for Cameleon to have its beneficiaries on stage for them to also educate and say that this should stop, child abuse in the Philippines should stop,” she said.

They will have a show today in Roxas City, at Robinsons Place Iloilo on May 23 at 12 noon, and in Passi City, Iloilo on May 26. These shows are free for the public.

Iloilo National High School will also host two shows on May 25. The school will issue tickets for P100.

ENARC artists and the Cameleon girls performed at Resorts World Manila on May 14.

Cameleon “rehabilitates young girls, victims of sexual abuse, and inspires them to reach beyond their limits so they can reach their dreams and have better lives.”

Its rehabilitation program includes community development, sports and circus, health, income generation and advocacy all centered on empowering and developing children and their families “through education, advocacy and psychosocial interventions.” (PN/ROMA R. GONZALES)
