Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala will lead agriculture and other officials at the opening on April 13, 2012 of the “Regional Agri-Aqua Trade Fair” at the Capiz Provincial Park  as part of the CAPIZtahan 2012 activities.

CAPIZtahan 2012 marks the 111th establishment of the civil government of Capiz and the 64th death anniversary of the late President Manuel Acuña-Roxas.

An initiative of the Department of Agriculture and the Capiz Provincial Government, the three-day trade fair will provide knowledge on the market trends and opportunities available to farmers, producers, processors, traders and other industry stakeholders.

The DA Regional Field Office VI and the Capiz Provincial Government, through the Capiz  Provincial Agriculturist, will gather the industry stakeholders in Region 6 and assist them in the promotion and marketing of “commodity winners”  as well as other products that have potentials in the local and foreign markets.

Other regions that have confirmed to join the trade fair include Regions 1,3,4-A, 4-B, and 7.

Secretary Alcala will be joined by DA-6 regional director Larry Nacionales  and other DA guests during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Agri-Aqua Trade Fair aims to strengthen participation and linkages among local government units, national government agencies, non-government organizations, people’s organizations and the private sector.

After the April 13 opening ceremony, exhibits will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Exhibitors would come from those who are engaged in food handicrafts, horticulture, aquaculture and related agricultural sector. Technologies, machineries and services will be showcased through products display. Market information exchange, technical and institutional services as well as sales, will also be on the agenda. The rest of the planned activities are expected to further update stakeholders of the agricultural growth and breakthroughs in the province.

Part of the event is the “Farmers Day” set on April 14 at the Capiz Gymnasium. More than 3,000 farmers are expected to show up for the occasion.

During the event, the Capiz provincial government headed by Gov. Victor A. Tanco will launch the Crop Insurance Program that will initially cover 5,000 hectares of rice lands. Other highlights of the program include the distribution of farm machineries and the symbolic turnover of the Tramline Project by the DA to the provincial government.

The province’s primary agricultural products include rice, corn, coconut, sugarcane, banana, and cutflower. It is a surplus producer of marine products like prawn, shrimp, oyster, crab, angel wings (diwal) milkfish, among others. The abundance of these products  has given the Province of Capiz  the tag as “Seafood Capital of the Philippines.” In a related event, the DA will also hold a Management Conference on April 13,2012 at the Gerry Roxas Foundation Training Center in Barangay Dayao, Roxas City. Top  DA officials are expected to attend the conference. (Publicity and Promotions Committee, CAPIZtahan 2012)
