The Creamline Cool Smashers withstood the strong challenge posed by the Petro Gazz Angels in five thrilling sets, 25-23, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10, in the 2022 PVL Open Conference on Wednesday at the Paco Arena.

Tots Carlos produced the best effort for Creamline with 28 points, 27 of which came from her ferocious attacks, to close out their pool play campaign in Pool B with an immaculate 3-0 record.

Jema Galanza contributed 18 markers while Alyssa Valdez finished with 17 points for the Cool Smashers, who also clinched the top seed in the bracket.

“This is a big morale-boosting win for our team going to the quarterfinals,” Carlos said in the post-game interview.

The first four sets saw a nip-and-tuck affair between the two star-studded squads, with the better attacking team getting the set victory.

The more experienced Cool Smashers flaunted their offensive strength in the deciding fifth set as Carlos and Valdez took up the scoring cudgels, while the defensive effort of the Angels crumbled.

Galanza capped off the attack party for Creamline with a strong spike to close out the victory.

Gretchel Soltones displayed a gallant effort for Petro Gazz with 23 points, 20 of them from attacks, while MJ Phillips chipped in 15 markers in their loss.

Despite their defeat, Petro Gazz still holds the number two seed in Pool B. Like the Cool Smashers, the Angels also notched a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
