ROXAS CITY, Capiz, May 16 (PIA6) -- The Provincial Health Office (PHO) in Capiz has already started its intensified information dissemination campaign on the 4S strategy against dengue, to bolster awareness and prevention from the mosquito-borne disease.
4S stands for Search and Destroy, Self-protection Measures, Seek Early Consultation, and Say No to Indiscriminate Fogging.
“The Rural Health Units also undertake the 4S campaign at the municipal and barangay levels,” said PHO-Capiz Public Information Officer Joeffry M. Espiritu.
Based on PHO records, three have died from the 52 suspected dengue cases from the January to May 5 monitoring in the province.
However, Espiritu clarified that two of the patients who died were from Aklan and seven from the total suspected dengue cases came from adjacent provinces of Capiz.
“There was an increase of about 85.71 percent in the figures compared to the same period last year,” he said.
There were only about 28 suspected dengue cases recorded in 2011.
All local chief executives are furnished with the weekly monitoring of dengue statistics in the province for reference and appropriate actions to protect the residents from the potentially life-threatening disease.
“If there is a suspected dengue case in a particular area, a community-based investigation is automatically conducted by the disease surveillance coordinators in the municipalities,” Espiritu noted.
Dengue is transmitted to people through the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus.
It is characterized as an acute illness suddenly acquired by an individual with symptoms like fever, headache, exhaustion, rashes, and severe muscle pain, frequently accompanied by sore throat, dizziness, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. (Alex A. Lumaque/JCM/PIA6 Capiz - May 16)
