Traditional wreath-laying to mark Roxas’ 64th death anniversary

As what has been the tradition, a wreath-laying ceremony on the monument of President Manuel Acuña Roxas at the Roxas City Public Plaza will take place on April 15,2012 to celebrate the late President’s 64th anniversary.

Close relatives of the late President and Capiz officials are expected to attend the 8 a.m. Mass at the Roxas City Metropolitan Cathedral, which would precede the wreath-laying.

Roxas’ death anniversary coincides with the 111th foundation day of the establishment of civil government of Capiz on April 15, 2012.

Capiz Gov. Victor A. Tanco said: As we commemorate the 64th death anniversary of this remarkable Filipino statesman on April 15, 2012, let us remember how Roxas endeavored to live a complete life by making the most out of his God-given potentials as a human being.”
Roxas City Mayor Angel Alan B. Celino urged the youth to take a closer look at the life of President Roxas and make it as their guide to become successful in their endeavors.

At 27 years of age, in 1919, Roxas was elected the 6th Governor of Capiz, becoming the youngest chief executive of the province. Such distinction has remained unsurpassed up to this day.

At 28, he was elected by his peers as President of the League of Governors of the Philippines.

At 29, he won the love of his heart and married Trinidad de Leon, daughter of Ceferino de Leon of the province of Bulacan.

From 1922 to 1938, at the prime of his life between the ages of 30 to 46 years, Roxas was reelected for four consecutive terms as Congressman for the first district of Capiz, ten years of which he has served therein as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1923 to 1933 from the 6th to the 8th Philippine Legislatures.

In 1934, at the age of 42, Roxas was elected Capiz delegate to the Constitutional Convention and became one of the wise men who led the faming of the 1935 Constitution, which became the basic Charter upon which the Commonwealth of the Philippines with the United States of America was founded.

Together with Manuel Luis Quezon and Sergio Osmena, the 1935 Constitution was the culmination of all their joint efforts for eventual Philippine independence.

In 1938, at age 46, he finally gave up is congressional seat to accept the portfolio of Secretary of Finance in the Cabinet of Presient Quezon. In 1941, at the age of 49, Roxas was elected senator for the 3rd National Assembly during the Commonwealth period.

In 1945, at age 53, he was elected Senate President and organized the so-called “liberal wing” of the Partido Nacionalista, eventually to become the Liberal Party of the Philippine politics. On April 23, 1946, at the age of 54, Roxas became President of the Philippines. In the aftermath of the blody war which was World War II and the birth of the Republic of the Philippines on July 4,1946, a great Filipino and an exceptional Capiceño named Manuel Acuna-Roxas steered this country towards a new brave world.
