Disaster preparedness camp at Inzo Arnaldo Village Integrated School, July 7.
ROXAS City — Four hundred thirty-four pupils and students from Grades 3 to 8 of Inzo Arnaldo Village Integrated School joined the first-ever disaster consciousness camp for children yesterday.

The children, accompanied by 22 teachers, learned various disaster preparedness skills through the following activities:

Fire extinguishing target game; jack-up game (using a hydraulic jack to remove a fake human foot from debris); a picture story show on the origin, and safety measures before, during and after an earthquake and tsunami; emergency shelter workshop; evacuating the differently-abled; emergency kit quiz;

Water bucket brigade; blanket stretcher medley; caterpillar crawl medley (to escape fires); origami tableware (folding paper cups out of newspapers and putting a plastic bag inside it to place food); tire-towering game (to save people during floods); and a first-aid workshop.

Each activity was held for only 15 to 20 minutes.

The camp was a collaboration of the school and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).

With storytelling and games, the camp was very appropriate for children, PDRRMC action officer Esperidion Pelaez said.

A boodle fight — eating mixed food placed on banana leaves with bare hands — was held. Notebooks, ballpens and certificates were given to the participants.

Resource speakers from the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, Capiz Emergency Response Team, and PDRRMC shared their expertise during the activities.(PN/Ralph John Mijares)
