ROXAS City — Products made in the municipalities in Capiz were shown in display booths during the 6th Provincial Tourism Week from September 23 to 29.

Others products displayed were those of local hotels and restaurants and the neighboring provinces.

During the weeklong celebration, the provincial government also held a convention for tourism and hospitality management educators and students, and a seminar-workshop on culture and governance.

Other activities included contests on cooking, hip-hop dance, rap singing, cultural dance and swimming.

The Provincial Tourism Week was “warmly welcomed by the people,” said Alphonsus Tesoro, provincial tourism officer.

It also “promoted tourism complementation” among provinces in Western Visayas, he said.

Tesoro said promoting tourism is a matter of complementation. Cooperation is needed in promoting the various tourism spots in the region, he said.

The important thing is we promote the entire Western Visayas in our tourism packages,” he stressed.

More than 50,000 tourists went to Capiz as of June this year, according to Tesoro.

The figure excludes the more than 100,000 one-day visitors or excursionists, he said.

He said most of the tourists go to the Sta. Monica Church in Panay town, Agtalin Shrine in Pilar and the Meditation Hills in Sapian, among others.

They also enjoy natural spots for river cruising, trekking and caving, he added.

The influx of tourists has contributed a lot to the economy of Capiz, considered one of the meetings, incentives, conferences and events destinations in the region, Tesoro said.

Meanwhile, he said officers from the National Museum, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Western Visayas Caving Association were in Capiz to assess and classify four caves in Pilar for possible anthropological study.(JOSE ARSENIO QUINZON/PN)
