ROXAS CITY, Capiz – A round table discussion was facilitated by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) last July 30 at the Provincial Capitol here to jumpstart the establishment of an orthography of the Capiz language.

KWF Commissioner Jose Laderas Santos led the discussion aimed at preserving and promoting the Capiznon dialect.

"A local dialect is very important in the learning process especially among the pupils to easily understand the subject matter," Santos noted.

He said the orthography will be very useful for schools, noting the start of K to 12 education which requires vernacular language as medium of instruction.

Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Officer Alphonsus Tesoro said the project is in line with the provincial government's thrust of preserving Capiceño culture and tradition.

Tesoro added that a series of discussions will follow, with a core group organized for the making of the Capiznon language alphabet.

The Capiznon language is a member of the Visayan language family and is often confused with Hiligaynon but has its own unique vocabulary and accent.

It was also learned during the gathering that some academicians are in the process of making a Capiznon dictionary. (The News Today/PIA/A. Lumaque)
