Feb. 15 is Jovita Fuentes Day in Roxas City

ROXAS CITY, Capiz, Feb. 14 (PIA6) – Pop and classical music will take center stage  here in a tribute to Ms. Jovita Fuentes, the great Capiceña diva, on her natal day on Feb. 15.

 The hour-long “Jovita Fuentes Cultural Show” will feature students who have won in school-based provincial level singing contests.  The show is part of the month-long Provincial Arts Month celebration.

 There will also be an audio – visual presentation on Fuentes’ background as a National Artist for Music in 1976 according to the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO).

Selected soprano singers in the province who performed in a tribute to Fuentes last year have also been invited to perform the Capiceñas’ compositions and other Tagalog classical songs.

Relatives and family friends of Fuentes were also invited to grace and watch the show.

A resolution has also been passed by the Roxas City Council declaring every February 15 as Jovita Fuentes Day in the city.

The great diva was born on Feb. 15, 1895 and died in 1978.

Her significant contributions are the publication of the song of Filipino compositions and the organization of the Boys Town Band Concert, said an online source.

She was influential in the establishment of the Music Production Foundation by an act of Philippine Congress which was signed into law by President Ramon Magsaysay.

Among the major awards Fuentes achieved aside from National Artist for Music were Diwa ng Lahi (1975), one of the Outstanding Women of the Philippines (1967), Voice Teacher of the Year (1952) and Presidential Merit for achievements in music (1958 ). (JCM/Alex A. Lumaque/PIA 6 Capiz)
